Lately, I've been going through a phrase. Actually, I don't know if you can call this a "phase," but I've been searching for a new job. So far I've applied for quite a few jobs with no luck. Like most people on the job hunt, it seems sometimes it's like a never ending cycle of applications (that ask for more skills than you have) and cover letters. Low on my luck and thinking I'm obviously not going about this job hunting thing the right way, I decided to find a book I could read. Because the best way for me to learn is through reading. Like every other time in need, I hit my library's search and found The New Rules of Work: The Modern Playbook Playbook For Navigating Your Career by
Alexandra Cavoulacos and Kathryn Minshew.

Cavoulacos and Minshew begin each chapter with the Old Rule that applies to how job searching use to be and pairs it with new rules. As I was reading through the book, I've found the evolution of these rules starling and surprising how much has changed in a short little time. I'm not old enough to have been in the job market long, but for the most part I've been going by the "old rules" of jobs. For most of my life, I've had a vague idea of doing adult job hunting (there was no high school class on it!) and from my recent experiences am surprised how hard it can actually seem.

What I liked about the book the most:

  • Easy to understand advice
  • Creative ways
  • Templates for cover letters and resumes to help
On the Fence:

The constant plug in with their website TheMuse.com annoyed me a bit. But I could understand the reason for this. They need more traffic to their site. Hell, if someone would give me a book deal I would be plugging the heck out of this blog.
